Newcastle United have agreed a deal to sign Ajax sensation Seun Steur in a deal worth around £20m, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Magpies have had a busy window so far after selling Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £70m, while a deal for Sandro Tonali to join Tottenham Hotspur for £100m was completed earlier this week.

That has allowed the club to seal a deal for Bazoumana Toure in attack, while they are also pushing to sign World Cup star Johan Manzambi to bolster their midfield. But they have now moved ahead with a deal for another midfield star to help Eddie Howe.

Steur, who has been described as ‘unbelievably special’, made his breakthrough into the Ajax team in the 2025/26 season, making 19 appearances in the Eredivisie, registering one goal and one assist in the process.

The 18-year-old central midfielder is well known for his brilliant first touch, creative ability and his passing between the lines, and Howe is ready to take the plunge on the youngster to strengthen his side and provide more options to feed the attack.

As a result, Newcastle have agreed to pay around £20m, including bonuses, to sign the teenage sensation, and Ajax have accepted the offer, with the player also agreeing to make the switch to St James’ Park.

Steur had previously reached a preliminary agreement with Ajax to renew his contract at the Johan Cruyff ArenA until 2030, but club chiefs refused to give him assurances over playing time, saying he would have to earn his spot rather than be given it.

Newcastle then entered the frame with an offer that the Dutch giants simply couldn’t refuse. The deal is seen as a huge blow for Ajax, as he is one of their more talented players, but the fee will help them strengthen in the transfer market.

The player has already departed Ajax’s training camp to prepare for a medical and putting pen to paper, and it’s reported by Dutch media that he will receive a huge pay-rise as a result of the transfer.

Newcastle Making Big Gamble on Steur

Newcastle clearly needed to improve their squad this summer, and Howe knows exactly what he needs to be targeting to get what he wants next season.

Steur has got very limited experience at the top level of the game, having never even been selected for the Netherlands Under-21 team due to his age. But alongside the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, who the club are keen to keep despite interest from Arsenal, Joelinton, Lewis Miley and any other potential signing who may come in, Steur will be given room to develop and make an impact.
