Newcastle United £114m transfer deals set to exploit Premier League loophole as new signing confirmed
Newcastle United transfers: Newcastle have completed the signing of 20-year-old midfielder Aladji Bamba from AS Monaco.
Newcastle United’s youthful summer recruitment drive continues with the signing of Aladji Bamba from AS Monaco.
The 20-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year deal at St James’ Park following a £30million transfer from the Ligue 1 club. He becomes Newcastle’s fourth summer signing after Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur.
And there is one thing all four players have in common: they are all below the age of 21.

That does raise questions over their lack of experience but also excitement regarding their potential and how they can develop in the years to come. Newcastle taking a relative chance on the players to give them an opportunity to perform and establish themselves in the Premier League could be a cost-effective transfer solution should the players realise their potential.
On the signing of Bamba, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “I’m really pleased to see Aladji become a Newcastle United player. He’s another exciting, young signing who we’re really looking forward to working with.
“Aladji adds depth and a range of qualities to our midfield options, with huge potential for growth. His development since breaking through at Monaco has been really impressive and something we believe we can help him build on.”
Newcastle United set to exploit Premier League squad rule
Newcastle have already sold Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon this summer while Kieran Trippier, John Ruddy, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett were released by the club and Aaron Ramsdale’s loan ended. That has freed up six places in Newcastle’s squad for the 2026/27 season.
But five of those places are still vacant heading into the new season despite the club signing four players for the first-team squad.
The Magpies will be able to name up to 25 senior players in their Premier League squad for the upcoming season. But any players born on or after January 1, 2005 are not included in the squad list but are still eligible to play.
As Jaouen, Toure, Steur and Bamba were all born after that date, they will not be named in Newcastle’s 25-man Premier League squad. The same goes for 20-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley, but Lewis Hall, who was not included in last season’s squad list, will now have to be include
