Newcastle United transfers: Sean Steur and Ewen Jaouen both made their first public appearances in a Newcastle shirt while Bazoumana Toure and Aladji Bamba wait to feature.

The National League side took the lead against Newcastle through Luke Supyk in the first half before a Ben Williams own goal made it 1-1 late on.

Steur played the full 90 minutes at the Gateshead International Stadium, one of only two players to play the full match for the Magpies along with Alex Murphy.

Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen was a second-half substitute for Nick Pope but wasn’t called into action.

“Good to see the new signings on the pitch, really pleased with Sean, who started the game,” Howe said. “I thought he played really well today. We can be really pleased with his performance in the first showing in Newcastle colours.

“Obviously Ewen came on at the end and it was good to see him on the pitch as well. They’re settling in well to the group and obviously we expect some more new players to come back from the holiday season.”

Newcastle’s latest signing Aladji Bamba trained with the first-team on Friday but was not involved at Gateshead while Bazoumana Toure remains off following his participation in the World Cup with Ivory Coast. But Howe has hinted the £73million duo could be in action soon.

When asked if they could return for Wednesday’s trip to Bristol City (7:30pm kick-off), Howe added: “Maybe we’ll just have to see their physical state when we get them. We want to make sure that when they enter the pitch, they’re in a good condition to play. I don’t see why that shouldn’t be relatively quick.”
