“Pure bulls” – Brother hits back at Newcastle Unit ed transfer drama, critical of fake news

  • Volendam goalkeeper Roy Steur has come out in defence of his father over Sean Steur’s move to Newcastle United this summer.

Speaking to NH, relayed by FCUpdate.nl, Roy has lashed out at the critics over his brother’s transfer to Newcastle United.

Both Sean and Roy started their youth careers at Ajax, with the stopper moving to Bayer Leverkusen in 2021.

The midfielder made his way into Ajax’s first team in 2025. His development caught Newcastle United’s attention, and they signed him for around €27m earlier this month.

Newcastle United transfer heavily criticised

The 23-year-old completed a move to the Premier League side on July 9th, and the Dutch media have constantly criticised his decision to pick the Magpies.

A day later, ESPN NL warned him that his first few months at Newcastle United is “going to be hell”.

De Telegraaf journalist Valentijn Driessen pointed out youngsters who left Ajax haven’t done well recently. He expects Sean Steur to struggle at Newcastle United.

Four days ago, journalist Johan Derksen accused the player’s father, Johan, of throwing him to the Lions by pushing to join the Magpies.

He said: “I don’t think that lad is physically up to the task of playing in England’s top flight. He’s not ready for that yet. But if they can make money, they’re so greedy they’ll throw that lad to the lions.”

FCUpdate now also points out Valentijn Driessen criticising Johan over Sean Steur’s move to St James’ Park.

“They are Volendammers, it’s all about money,” Driessen explained.

Roy Steur has sent a clear message to those criticising his father.

“It doesn’t really bother us that much. We know what our father is like: he always protects us and is always there for us. He is always there for us. People who know my father also know that what those people are saying is pure bull,” he added.

There’s also been a suggestion that Johan is the midfielder’s agent. The Volendam stopper wasted no time in dismissing this.

“It is being said that my father is Sean’s agent: that is already incorrect. People are already coming up with information that isn’t true. We attach little value to everything that is said,” Roy explained.
