Leeds United is delighted to announce the permanent signing of Swiss international defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach. The 29-year-old centre-back has agreed a three-year deal and becomes the club’s fourth addition of the summer transfer window, following James Trafford, Harry Wilson and Tarik Muharemovic.
The deal is worth an initial £6.8 million, rising to £8.5 million with add-ons. Elvedi arrives at Elland Road after 11 highly successful years with the Bundesliga club, where he made 364 appearances across all competitions, including more than 300 in the Bundesliga and 15 in the Champions League group stages.
A reliable and versatile presence at the heart of defence, Elvedi can operate across the back line. He previously worked under Leeds manager Daniel Farke during the German’s 2022-23 season at Mönchengladbach, featuring in 34 matches that year. The reunion is expected to help the defender settle quickly into life in the Premier League.
Internationally, Elvedi has earned 73 caps for Switzerland. He played every minute of the nation’s run to the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, underlining his experience and consistency at the highest level. Born in Zurich, the 1.89m defender began his career at FC Zurich before moving to Germany as a teenager in 2015.
His arrival strengthens the defensive options available to Farke and coincides with Sebastiaan Bornauw’s season-long loan move to Hamburg. Elvedi is eligible for Leeds’ Premier League opener away at Nottingham Forest on Saturday and could feature in the matchday squad.
Speaking on the announcement, the club expressed excitement at adding a proven performer with both domestic and international pedigree. Elvedi becomes the most experienced player in the current Leeds squad and is expected to bring leadership and stability to the back line as the Whites prepare for their Premier League campaign.
