NEW head coach Matthias Jaissle is confident “realistic” Dan Burn is right as Newcastle prepare to adopt a siege mentality once again.England defender Burn was one of the first recruits to Eddie Howe’s brave new world in the post-takeover world at St James’ Park, returning to his native Tyneside from Brighton in January 2022 to play his part in a successful fight against Premier League relegation and subsequent rise.Appointed club captain in the wake of Bruno Guimaraes’ £75million departure for Arsenal earlier this month, the 34-year-old last week pointed to the club’s ability to thrive in a situation where it is “us against the world” amid the uncertainty caused by a summer exodus, and Jaissle is keen to draw upon that collective defiance.Speaking ahead of today’s tough opener against Liverpool, the German said: “Dan is a leader and a captain and told you that probably on purpose because he is also realistic. He sees the situation, and I totally agree.“That can give us a strength. If there is a good, good synergy with the fans and they back us, I am 100 per cent convinced together with the players and the staff members, that could create this benefit and we want to use that.”This summer has proved something of a watershed for the Magpies with Howe, the man who masterminded an end to Newcastle’s 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy and a return to Champions League football, having departed after almost five years at the helm as his meticulously- assembled team underwent radical change.The loss of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Guimaraes, as well as hugely-experienced full-back Kieran Tripper, has stripped the squad he has left behind of both quality and know-how and for all the club’s Saudi-backed owners have invested heavily in potential to plug the gaps, the immediate future is difficult to predict.Jaissle knows there is much work to be done after what represents a reset, but is largely keeping his targets for the new season to himself.Asked what would represent a successful campaign, he said: “That we see development, that we see improvement in our way of playing, that we see more and more togetherness of the group.“Especially when you have such a transition like we have right now with many challenges, then it’s always the best case that you see that improvement, you see that development, and that will be then for now a big success.”The first hurdle in Jaissle’s path is a sizeable one as Liverpool arrive at St James’ with Alexander Isak among their ranks for the first time since his controversial £130m switch to Anfield, and his reception is likely to be in marked contrast to the outpouring of affection before kick-off for the late Kevin Keegan, a man who resides in the folklore of both clubs.But the Newcastle boss said: “Our lads will just focus on themselves, this is the most important thing. I think our fans will focus on our lads, engaging with them, supporting them, that will be the most important thing.”
