The 29-year-old has challenged the validity of the final year of his Palace contract, which currently runs until June 2027. Mateta and his representatives disputed the 12-month extension activated by the Eagles in 2024, with the matter previously taken before an independent Premier League tribunal. The outcome was understood to favour Palace, while FIFA later declined to intervene because it did not have jurisdiction over the dispute.

That has left Mateta in an awkward position. He remains legally tied to Palace, but his desire to leave the club is now increasingly clear. Rather than allowing the situation to drag on, Palace could consider a fresh offer if one arrives before the transfer window closes. The Eagles have already seen the striker attract interest from elsewhere, meaning a transfer could now become a realistic solution to an increasingly uncomfortable situation.

Aston Villa are among the clubs understood to have shown interest in Mateta. Their situation could become particularly important if Ollie Watkins leaves for Saudi Arabia, with Mateta reportedly viewed as one possible replacement. Tottenham have also been linked with the Frenchman, although Villa’s interest appears to be the more concrete development at this stage.

For Palace, losing Mateta would be a major blow. The striker has become an important figure at Selhurst Park and was the hero of their Conference League triumph, scoring the decisive goal in the final. He also remains under contract and recently started Palace’s Premier League opener against Everton.
