Signing a new defender is on Newcastle United’s agenda ahead of Matthias Jaissle’s arrival as Eddie Howe’s replacement.

Jaissle is expected to take over from Howe following the English coach’s decision to leave earlier this week. While replacing Bruno Guimaraes will be a priority ahead of his widely anticipated move to Arsenal, other areas of the squad need addressing.

A 12th-placed finish in the Premier League last season means the Magpies won’t be competing in Europe in Jaissle’s first campaign in charge. The German coach will want a strong enough squad to compete for European qualification.

Newcastle appear keen to sign a new centre-back, and they are one of the clubs to have made inquiries about signing Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini. The Italian’s name has been mentioned with the Tyneside outfit in the past including last summer.

A report from Tuttomercatoweb.com claims that they and Tottenham Hotspur have both checked on the defender’s potential availability. The Italians have responded by making clear that they won’t sell the 22-year-old for anything less than €50 million (£42.7m).

Scalvini is one of Atalanta’s most important players and is viewed as one of the best young defensive talents in Serie A. He was part of the team that won the Europa League in 2024 and has grown into a highly rated centre-back.

Maurizio Sarri views him as a key asset for his defence, which only makes a potential deal more difficult. Only a huge offer for the player will convince the Italian club to cash in this summer.

Newcastle fans are eager for the club’s higher-ups to show ambition, and signing Scalvini would be a huge statement. He has earned plaudits amid his rise at Gewiss Stadium and has even proven effective from set pieces with three goals in Serie A last season.

After deciding against paying Atalanta’s asking price last summer, the Magpies swooped for Malick Thiaw from AC Milan. The German made a promising start last season despite a nightmare outing in the defeat to Barcelona at Camp Nou.

Clearly, the recruitment staff have taken a liking to Serie A and could look to lure another of their top defenders to the Premier League. Described as a ‘world-class talent ‘, he is a signing that would excite fans and help Jaissle build a team that can get back to competing for UEFA Champions League football.
