Shearer Urges Jaissle to Bench Newcastle Star After Dismal Everton Performance
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has pulled no punches in his assessment of Newcastle’s disappointing 3–1 pre-season defeat to Everton at Murrayfield Stadium, tearing into **William Osula** following a toothless display in Edinburgh.
The Magpies struggled to find rhythm in what was newly appointed head coach **Matthias Jaissle’s** second game at the helm. First-half goals from Thierno Barry and an Iliman Ndiaye penalty put Everton in complete control before Tyrique George added a third after the break. While Harvey Barnes managed a late consolation goal for the Tyneside club, Shearer was left infuriated by the lack of threat offered at the top end of the pitch during the opening period.
Speaking after the match, Newcastle’s all-time record goalscorer singled out Osula for heavy criticism, claiming the forward has failed to deliver since his arrival on Tyneside and urging Jaissle to reconsider his selection options ahead of the Premier League opener.
“You look at the movement, the intensity, and the presence expected from a Newcastle striker, and it simply wasn’t there,” Shearer noted. “Everton’s backline had a comfortable afternoon against him. He hasn’t made any tangible impact since joining the club, and if Matthias Jaissle is serious about laying down a marker this season, he cannot afford to keep starting players who aren’t producing.
Pressure Mounting on Jaissle’s New System
Jaissle opted to field a mixed side in the first half before making ten changes at the interval to assess the depth of his squad. However, the defensive errors and lack of sharp central focal points exposed glaring issues that need fixing before Newcastle face Liverpool.
With the competitive season just days away, Shearer believes Jaissle must be ruthless with his squad selection. If Newcastle hope to challenge for European places under their new German boss, performances like Wednesday night’s will require swift and decisive changes in the starting eleven.
