Newcastle Fans Furious as Jaissle’s Biggest Problem Is Exposed in Late Leverkusen Defeat

Matthias Jaissle’s first match in charge at St. James’ Park ended in frustration as Newcastle United fell to a 2-1 pre-season defeat against Bayer Leverkusen. While friendly fixtures are typically used to iron out tactical kinks, the loss laid bare the manager’s most glaring tactical issue just days before the Premier League campaign kicks off against Liverpool.
The Magpies were caught cold in the opening four minutes when Ibrahim Maza slotted home for the German side. Defensive recruit Malick Thiaw managed to haul Newcastle back into the contest with a 44th-minute equalizer, but the structural flaws up top prevented Jaissle’s side from establishing control.
Newcastle’s primary issue remains an isolated, laboring attack. Operating as the central focal point, Nick Woltemade struggled significantly to hold up play or release passes quickly enough. Jaissle could be seen animated on the touchline, pleading with his center-forward to move the ball faster. Despite Yoane Wissa putting in a bright, creative performance in behind, Newcastle lacked sharp finishing power. The persistent lack of dynamism up front left the hosts vulnerable, and Victor Boniface capitalized by striking an 82nd-minute winner for Leverkusen.
The late goal triggered loud groans from the St. James’ Park faithful. Fans are increasingly furious that the squad’s lack of edge up front remains unresolved with competitive fixtures looming. Addresses in recruitment are expected—with right-back Amar Dedić closing in on a transfer—but Jaissle acknowledged that the squad knows its core needs.
Unless Jaissle can fix the stagnant movement up front before taking his team to Anfield, Newcastle risk a very difficult start to the new campaign.
