Argentina haven’t only lost their place at the top of world football after their World Cup final defeat as they will now have to make changes to their kit.
A 1-0 loss to Spain at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey broke Lionel Messi’s and La Albiceleste’s hearts. Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner prevented the defending champions from winning the tournament for a second time in a row.
Argentina didn’t take the defeat well and a post-match brawl involving Leandro Paredes marred the final. For Messi and Co, they will be given a constant reminder of their World Cup heartbreak due to one of FIFA’s rules.

Lionel Scaloni’s men headed into the World Cup with the goal of defending their world title and the gold crest that sat in between the nation’s badge and Adidas logo. That outline of the trophy with the words ‘FIFA World Champions 2022’ will be no more; per FIFA rules, it must be removed.
Spain will now adopt the golden badge for the next four years in recognition of their status as world champions. The kit change will come into effect immediately and the South Americans will have to wait until at least 2030 to potentially reclaim it.
Messi is likely to have played his last World Cup game at the age of 39 but reports in Argentina suggest he will continue representing his nation in the coming months. While doing so, he and his country are allowed to continue displaying a badge commemorating their Copa America win in 2024.
