SUNDERLAND have criticised the decision to make December’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park a ‘bubble fixture’, meaning all away fans will have to travel to the game in designated coaches.
The decision, which was made by Newcastle’s independent Safety Advisory Group (SAG), lays out the rules away fans must follow for the game on Tyneside on Sunday, December 6 (2pm).
Sunderland have released a statement saying they do not agree with the ‘full bubble’ arrangement, which restricts supporters’ travel choices, but will comply with the ruling.
The club said: “Throughout this process, the club has engaged with the relevant authorities, setting out clearly our concerns about the impact of a full bubble operation on Sunderland supporters, particularly the restrictions on individual travel choices and the additional inconvenience for supporters.
“Whilst we do not agree with the decision that has been reached, we recognise that this decision will disappoint many supporters who would prefer to make their own travel arrangements.
“While respecting the SAG’s decision, we have sought clarity on the revised risk assessment and requested transparency as to how the end decision has been made.”
Sunderland have been allocated 2,200 tickets for the match.
Coach pick-up points and travel details will be confirmed in due course, along with information for supporters with accessibility requirements.
Fans without tickets are strongly advised not to travel to Newcastle on the day.
The club are considering alternative arrangements to allow fans to watch the match at the Stadium of Light and will share details once confirmed.
Sunderland also said they will continue to work with fan groups to ensure supporters’ concerns are represented.
