Former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford did not hold back in his scathing assessment of his old club following their 1–1 draw against Manchester United at Elland Road. Despite fighting back through Dominic Calvert-Lewin to claim a point, Beckford insisted Leeds showed “no real presence or authority,” singling out forward Noah Okafor as emblematic of their lightweight attacking display.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the final whistle, the former White Rose favorite tore into Leeds’ lack of conviction in key areas. Beckford argued that playing at home in a fierce derby requires raw intensity, drive, and strikers who grab the game by the scruff of the neck. Instead, he saw an attacking unit content with passive passages of play rather than taking direct control.
”It can’t keep happening,” Beckford fumed. “You’re playing at home against your biggest rivals, and where is the intent? You look at forward players like Noah Okafor—the quality is there, we’ve seen it, but today he just floated through the game. No presence, no drive, no authority. When you’re leading the line or playing off the main striker for Leeds in a match like this, you have to leave a mark on the opposition defenders. You can’t just be a passenger.”
Okafor, who struggled to make a meaningful impact before being withdrawn by Daniel Farke in the 74th minute, managed only a single shot attempt throughout his shift. For Beckford, that peripheral performance encapsulated Leeds’ wider issues.
While a point against Manchester United stops the rot on paper, Beckford warned that Leeds will continue to drop crucial points if key attackers like Okafor do not bring greater physicality and a sharp competitive edge to their game week in, week out.
