No Presence”: Tim Cahill Rips Into Thierno Barry After Everton’s Disappointing Chelsea Loss

Everton legend Tim Cahill did not hold back in his post-match assessment of Thierno Barry following Everton’s 2–0 defeat to Chelsea at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The former Blues star delivered a scathing review of the forward, warning that Everton’s attacking struggles will continue if the 23-year-old fails to offer a genuine physical and tactical anchor up front.
Speaking after the home loss, Cahill pointed directly to Barry’s inability to influence the game against Chelsea’s central defenders. Despite starting as the focal point in David Moyes’ 4-2-3-1 setup, Barry managed three off-target efforts without forcing a single save from Chelsea’s backline.
”When you play as a single striker for a club like Everton, you have to compete, hold the ball up, and give your midfield time to breathe,” Cahill said. “Right now, Barry has no presence out there. He isn’t occupying defenders, he isn’t winning his aerial duels, and if that doesn’t change, it can keep happening week in, week out.”
Cahill emphasized that playing for Everton demands a level of fight and physical engagement that Barry simply did not display against Chelsea. With Pedro Neto netting twice in the second half to seal all three points for the visitors, Everton spent prolonged periods pinned in their own half, unable to make the ball stick whenever they attempted to transition forward.
For Moyes, Barry’s quiet afternoon highlights a growing dilemma at the top end of the pitch. If the young forward cannot develop the combative edge and hold-up play that Cahill famously embodied during his time at Goodison Park, Everton risk remaining predictable and starved of service in big Premier League fixtures.
