Newcastle United have taken a decisive step into a new era by securing a verbal agreement with German coach Matthias Jaissle to become their next head coach. The deal, running until June 2030, is expected to be formalised in the coming days, with Saudi club Al-Ahli already informed of the Magpies’ intention to trigger his release clause.
The 38-year-old will replace Eddie Howe, who has stepped down after nearly five years at St James’ Park. Howe guided Newcastle to their first major trophy in 70 years with the 2025 Carabao Cup but informed the club of his desire for a break from football. The departure has been described as amicable, and Newcastle moved quickly to identify his successor.
Jaissle arrives with an impressive recent track record. After successful spells at RB Salzburg, where he won consecutive Austrian Bundesliga titles and an Austrian Cup, he joined Al-Ahli in 2023. There he delivered back-to-back AFC Champions League Elite titles in 2025 and 2026, becoming the first coach to achieve the feat, along with a Saudi Super Cup triumph. His teams are known for high-pressing, attacking football and developing young talent—qualities that align with Newcastle’s ambitions under Saudi Public Investment Fund ownership, which also holds a majority stake in Al-Ahli.
The shared ownership structure has streamlined negotiations. Jaissle is expected to join the squad imminently and could take charge for the upcoming pre-season trip to La Manga. Newcastle fans will hope the energetic German can build on Howe’s foundations and push the club further in the Premier League and Europe.
