Newcastle United came through a nervy second half to beat Hull City 2-1 at St James’ Park and clinch their second win of the new Premier League season.
The Magpies got off to an electric start with goals from Joe Willock and Lewis Hall inside the opening seven minutes before Yoane Wissa squandered the chance to make it 3-0 in first-half stoppage time after his penalty was saved by Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
That proved costly as Mohamed-Ali Cho pulled one back for The Tigers in the 67th minute. The visitors piled on the pressure in their push for an equaliser but Newcastle, who were without several key players through injury, managed to hold out.
It was a “much-needed” three points, according to Newcastle legend Alan Shearer, as Jaissle’s side bounced back from Monday night’s 4-1 defeat to Leeds United to carry a win into the three-week international break.
“A much-needed win for the Toon,” Shearer wrote on X. “The missed pen to go 3-0 was always going to be costly. Credit to Hull for coming back into it and making Newcastle defend very well.”
Newcastle were without Ewen Jaouen, Tino Livramento, Amar Dedic, Dan Burn, Joelinton, Jacob Ramsey, Will Osula and Anthony Elanga, which saw Jaissle draft in 17-year-olds Mason Miley, Michael Mills, Kyran Thompson into the squad alongside 19-year-old Vakhtang Salia and 21-year-old Miodrag Pivas.
Neither of those youngsters made it off the bench as Jaissle turned to Fabian Schar, Bazoumana Toure and Aladji Bamba during the second half.
