Roy Keane was in no doubt about Everton’s weakest performer against Manchester United, and the statistics make his criticism of Brennan Johnson difficult to ignore.Johnson endured a frustrating afternoon at Hill Dickinson Stadium as Everton fought back twice to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw.

The winger started on the right side of David Moyes’ attack but struggled to influence the game before being replaced by Jack Grealish in the 66th minute. His numbers tell the story. Johnson managed only 28 touches during his 66 minutes on the pitch.

He completed 13 passes, failed to complete any of his attempted crosses, recorded no successful dribbles and won only one of the five duels he contested. He also committed two fouls and received a yellow card. The lack of attacking influence was particularly disappointing given Everton’s need for width and penetration against United. Johnson was brought into the starting XI after Iliman Ndiaye’s departure to Manchester City, but his performance offered little threat from the flank.

Everton eventually rescued a point through Tyrique George’s 83rd-minute equaliser and Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ spectacular stoppage-time strike. United had twice taken the lead through Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.

For Johnson, though, the draw provided little comfort. Keane’s assessment reflects what the numbers showed. Everton needed more from their £30m-plus winger, and Moyes now faces a decision over whether Johnson deserves another start after such an ineffective display.
