Newcastle United have been dealt multiple blows in the ongoing summer transfer window. The latest of them have come in the goalkeeper position, as they have lost out on not one but two of their targets in quick succession.
James Trafford was believed to have been the top target for months. But he seems to be heading to Leeds United in what could be a £40 million transfer move.
It has been reported that Newcastle United had held talks to sign Carl Rushworth from Brighton & Hove Albion as well. But he will be joining Coventry City in a £30 million transfer package, £22 million initial, after helping Frank Lampard’s side win the Championship on loan last season.
Newcastle United have been linked with SC Braga’s Lukas Hornicek lately as well. But it looks like they also have their eyes on a goalkeeper who is drawing interest from both PSG and Juventus.
Newcastle United holding internal discussions for goalkeeper
According to The Athletic, Parma’s Zion Suzuki, the 23-year-old Japan international, had featured during internal discussions at Newcastle United.
But according to Fabrizio Romano, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus are both in talks with Parma for Suzuki. The player is thought to be keen on a move but there is no green light from his club yet.
So, it is going to be a challenging move to try and sign Suzuki for sure. And this summer, Newcastle United do not have a good record when it comes to competing with others for a player.
It remains to be seen if they are successful in getting something done or not. But if you ask me, do not expect to see Suzuki in a Newcastle United shirt next season.
Nick Pope could stay
Now, this is just a case of me putting two and two together. After all, Nick Pope is 34 years of age and has only a year left on his current deal. He has been heavily linked with a move away.
That being said, if you ask me, it is very possible that he could continue on at St James’ Park for another year. Let us not forget that the club have already missed out on primary targets.
So, at this point, they are going for alternatives. The further down that list they go, the lower the confidence will be around the move.
On the other hand, Ewen Jaouen might not be ready to make a meaningful contribution just yet, having come in from Ligue 2. As a result, sticking with the tried-and-tested option of Pope is not the worst idea in the world.
