Football World Mourns as Jesús de Miguel Dies After Terrifying On-Pitch Collision
Football has been left heartbroken after a frightening incident during a Spanish league match took a tragic turn, leaving players, supporters and some of Europe’s biggest clubs struggling to find the right words.
CD Tenerife confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, that their 30-year-old striker, Jesús de Miguel Alameda, had died following a serious collision during Monday’s Segunda División meeting with FC Andorra. The incident happened in stoppage time, when Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his goal to challenge De Miguel. The collision left the Tenerife forward requiring immediate medical attention, with players from both sides urgently calling for medical staff. Owono was shown a straight red card following the incident, while the match, which was level at 2-2, was abandoned.
Medical personnel spent several minutes treating De Miguel on the pitch before he was transported to hospital by ambulance. Reports confirmed that the striker had suffered a cardiac arrest and was admitted to intensive care. Tenerife initially provided an update indicating that his condition was serious, before later revealing that his neurological condition had deteriorated. Sadly, the club announced his death on Tuesday morning, bringing an end to the desperate hopes of supporters who had been waiting for positive news.
The announcement prompted an emotional response from across the football world. Andorra president Gerard Piqué expressed his sorrow, while Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid were among the clubs to send condolences to De Miguel’s family, teammates and Tenerife supporters. UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin also paid tribute, describing the news as heartbreaking. UEFA announced that a moment of silence would be observed before European matches during the week, while the Spanish Football Federation postponed its scheduled Tuesday fixtures as a mark of respect.
De Miguel had joined Tenerife from Castellón in 2025 and played an important role in the club’s campaign to secure promotion to Spain’s second division. His death has once again brought the dangers of serious on-pitch collisions and the importance of emergency medical response into the spotlight. For his teammates, opponents and everyone who witnessed Monday’s frightening scenes, football has suddenly become secondary to a much greater loss. The thoughts of the football community remain with his family and loved ones during this devastating time.
Rest in peace, Jesús de Miguel.
