Newcastle United Fans Boo Their Own Players After Embarrassing Everton Defeat as Late Red Card Makes Matters Worse

Newcastle’s Premier League meeting with Everton on Monday night ended in a disappointing 1–0 defeat, but the result was only part of the story. The home supporters made their frustration clear by booing the players both at half-time and at the final whistle. Everton had been the more threatening side throughout the evening, while Newcastle struggled to produce the attacking football expected from them. Even Jamie Carragher was unimpressed, describing Newcastle’s recent performances as flat and boring, suggesting that the club could be heading towards a difficult season. The first half ended without either team registering a shot on target, underlining just how disappointing the contest had been.

The decisive moment arrived just four minutes into the second half. Everton took a quick free-kick through Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who released Tyrique George into a dangerous position. George’s effort somehow slipped underneath Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček, leaving Thierno Barry with the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net. However, Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle was furious about the goal, believing Barry had committed a foul on Fabian Schär with an elbow during the build-up. VAR checked the incident, including a possible offside, but the goal was allowed to stand. Newcastle were suddenly chasing the game, and their response was far from convincing.

Anthony Elanga came closest to rescuing Newcastle when his effort struck the post in the 66th minute, with Everton eventually clearing the danger. Substitute Yoane Wissa also tested Jordan Pickford late in the game, but the Everton goalkeeper produced an excellent save to preserve his side’s advantage. Just when Newcastle needed composure, another incident made their evening even worse. Substitute Jacob Ramsey received two yellow cards within just 86 seconds during stoppage time, resulting in his dismissal in the 98th minute. It was a frustrating ending to an already miserable night for the home supporters.

After the match, Jaissle did not attempt to hide from the criticism. He admitted that he understood why supporters had booed the team and accepted responsibility for the performance. He also acknowledged that Newcastle lacked confidence, were not brave enough in possession and relied too heavily on long balls. His comments will do little to ease concerns among supporters who expected a more aggressive and entertaining style of football under his management. Everton, meanwhile, celebrated their first away league victory of the season and moved above Newcastle in the Premier League table.

The defeat leaves Newcastle with four losses in their last five matches across all competitions, while their home struggles continue to raise serious questions. With supporters already expressing their disappointment and their manager accepting responsibility, attention will now turn to how the team responds in its next fixture. Is this simply a difficult period of transition, or are Newcastle facing a much bigger problem under Jaissle?
