Newcastle Fans Have Fresh Questions After Everton Defeat As Jaissle Faces Another Huge Test

Newcastle United supporters travelled to Merseyside expecting a strong performance, but what they witnessed left many questioning the direction of their team. The defeat was disappointing enough, but a particular moment involving manager Matthias Jaissle and one of his substitutions has now become another talking point among the Magpies faithful.
Newcastle were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after suffering a 3–1 defeat against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday, October 29. James Garner opened the scoring before Hayden Hackney doubled Everton’s advantage just before half-time. Thierno Barry then made it three in the second half, leaving Newcastle with a mountain to climb. Dan Burn eventually pulled one back in the 88th minute, but it was too late to change the outcome. The result ended Newcastle’s defence of the competition they won in the 2024/25 season.

However, the reaction from the travelling supporters has attracted almost as much attention as the result itself. With Newcastle trailing 3–0, Jaissle introduced 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur for the final stages of the match. Rather than receiving ordinary applause, the substitution was met with loud, sarcastic cheers from sections of the away support. Supporters have been questioning why the young midfielder has received so little playing time recently, particularly after impressing against Hull City. Several fans had already started leaving before the final whistle, while boos could also be heard afterwards.

Jaissle has since acknowledged the supporters’ frustration, admitting that they deserved a better result after making the journey to Merseyside. He also defended aspects of his team’s performance, pointing to the chances Newcastle created while accepting that defensive mistakes had cost them. Newcastle registered 28 shots compared with Everton’s 11, but their attacking efforts produced only one goal. Captain Dan Burn also recognised the disappointment, saying the team needed to put things right in their next meeting with Everton. The manager now faces questions about his defensive organisation, attacking efficiency and decisions involving younger players.
And the timing could hardly be more interesting. Newcastle are scheduled to welcome Everton to St James’ Park on Monday, November 2, giving Jaissle’s men an immediate opportunity to respond to the cup disappointment. Supporters will want more than promises; they will want a convincing performance and a result. Can Newcastle silence the growing criticism with a response at home, or will another disappointing display increase the pressure on Jaissle? One thing is certain: the attention will be firmly on the Magpies.
