Manchester United in advanced talks to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle

The Brazilian midfielder could replace Casemiro this summer as Manchester United look to strengthen their midfield for next season’s Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

Manchester United in advanced talks to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle

Manchester United are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, in what could become one of the club’s most significant summer transfers. According to a report by Reuters, the Brazilian midfielder could join Old Trafford in an €80million (£69m) move, though interest from Real Madrid could complicate the deal.

Guimaraes’ links with the Spanish giants date back to 2022, when he was on the verge of joining Los Blancos before Newcastle’s substantial bid convinced Lyon to sell. Now, with Newcastle’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Barcelona, the Brazilian midfielder appears increasingly likely to depart, especially as European football next season looks uncertain for the Magpies.

Manchester United Set Sights on £69m Real Madrid star as Casemiro Replacement

The move would almost certainly be intended to replace Casemiro, who has already confirmed he will leave Manchester United at the end of the season. The 34-year-old Brazilian has reportedly recommended Guimaraes as the ideal replacement, signaling his confidence in the midfielder’s ability to fill his shoes. Casemiro’s influence has been clear this season, particularly under interim manager Michael Carrick, who has overseen a remarkable run since taking charge, winning seven of nine games and lifting United to third in the Premier League table.

Guimaraes’ potential arrival would add significant depth to a United midfield that has been stretched this season. Despite having other options, including Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, and Carlos Baleba, United appear in need of reinforcements, particularly as the club looks to solidify its position in the Champions League for 2026/27. Adding Guimaraes—and potentially another central midfielder—would allow Carrick to rotate effectively and manage the squad across a challenging campaign.

United’s focus this season has largely been on the Premier League after early exits from domestic cup competitions. This means they have only played 40 games in total, allowing the team to concentrate on climbing the table. The Reds’ latest victory came against Aston Villa, a top-five rival, in which Casemiro scored for the third time under Carrick’s management. This win helped United move six points clear of Chelsea, who currently occupy fourth place, and positioned them just four points behind Manchester City as the March international break approaches.

While Carrick has enjoyed a strong run of results, injury concerns continue to challenge the squad. Key defenders Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt are both nearing returns, though De Ligt’s back issue has proven frustratingly difficult to manage. Carrick remains cautious, stating, “He’s [Martinez] a lot closer. He’s getting there. After this one, I think he’ll be alright. Frustrating for Mata [De Ligt], he’s been trying to work towards getting back, it’s a back issue that’s proving difficult. We’ll keep working as hard as we can.”

Other players have also faced setbacks. Mason Mount returned to the matchday squad last weekend but is unlikely to feature in the starting XI against Bournemouth, while Patrick Dorgu remains absent. Defender Noussair Mazraoui missed some training this week due to illness, though Carrick is confident he can still play at the Vitality Stadium.

Guimaraes would not just be a like-for-like replacement for Casemiro; he brings a dynamic presence in midfield capable of controlling games and linking defence to attack. His tactical intelligence, passing range, and ability to break up opposition play make him one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe. Should United secure the deal, he would immediately become a key figure in Carrick’s plans and could help transform the team’s control in the middle of the park.

With the summer transfer window approaching, Manchester United appear ready to make significant moves to strengthen their squad. Guimaraes’ potential arrival could signal a new era for the club, offering a mix of experience and youth in midfield while ensuring that the team is better equipped for domestic and European challenges. For Carrick, who has revitalized United’s form in recent weeks, adding Guimaraes could provide the platform to push for a top-four finish and mount a serious challenge for the Premier League next season.
