Lammens explained that their similarities in personality and approach to the game have helped forge a strong bond between the two keepers. “Probably why our friendship has grown so much is because we’re a bit similar as well in every aspect – I can see a lot of myself in him. And it’s the same the other way around; he tells me a lot: ‘you’re so much like me when I was younger.’”

Heaton, now 39, continues to train alongside United’s goalkeeping group, which also includes second-choice Altay Bayindir. His presence offers a rare blend of experience, technical knowledge, and calming influence in the dressing room. “He knows what I’m thinking in every situation almost, so that’s also where he helps me, maybe in more difficult situations, or when I’m doing really well, trying to help me not get too outside of my head,” Lammens explained.

Ben Foster, who hosted Lammens on his podcast, shared his view of Heaton’s enduring quality, noting the respect the veteran commands from everyone around him. Lammens echoed this, pointing out that Heaton is perhaps one of the most underappreciated goalkeepers of his generation. “For a Belgian guy, he didn’t really have the recognition probably in the world. Especially, the most important thing, every teammate you speak to about – or even his teammates now in training – the way they talk about him, his qualities on the pitch, but even more so his qualities off the pitch, as the guy he is.”
