“We need to find solutions” — Maresca Issues Warning Over Reece James Ahead of Leeds Clash

With key players missing, Maresca discusses Chelsea’s search for stability and new midfield solutions.

“We need to find solutions” — Maresca Issues Warning Over Reece James Ahead of Leeds Clash

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has urged caution over Reece James’ fitness as the Blues prepare for a difficult trip to Elland Road, insisting the club must “do the right thing” with their captain despite a growing midfield crisis.

With Moises Caicedo suspended for three matches after his straight red card against Arsenal, Chelsea’s midfield options have suddenly become stretched—yet Maresca is refusing to risk James, even though the captain delivered one of his best performances of the season in the centre of the pitch last Sunday.

James’ New Midfield Role Raises Questions

James stepped into midfield during the 1–1 draw with Arsenal after Caicedo’s dismissal and impressed with his power, calmness on the ball, and leadership. The 24-year-old completed several crucial tackles and helped Chelsea stay competitive despite being a man down.

But while many supporters expect the captain to repeat that role against Leeds, Maresca made it clear that the club must protect James after years of injury setbacks.

“It’s complicated. I would like to start him, but we need to do the right thing,” Maresca said on Tuesday.

The Chelsea boss explained that James’ versatility gives him options, but the decision must be based on physical condition and tactical needs.

“He can play in both positions. He has been at full-back all his life, but he has also played as a midfielder.

We choose midfield for him when we need physicality in the middle. It depends on the game plan, but he’s doing very well in both positions.”

Maresca’s comments underline a growing reality at Chelsea: James is becoming more than just a right-back. His strength, passing range and reading of the game make him a valuable option in midfield—but only when his body allows it. With Leeds known for their aggressive pressing and high-energy football, pushing James too far could be risky.

Caicedo’s Suspension Creates a Major Gap

Chelsea’s midfield dilemma deepened after Caicedo’s wild challenge on Mikel Merino earned him a straight red. Referee Anthony Taylor upgraded the yellow card to a red after a quick VAR review, handing the Ecuadorian a three-match ban.

Caicedo will miss matches against Leeds, Bournemouth and Everton—three games Chelsea can’t afford to slip up in. He has been one of the club’s strongest performers this season, leading the team in ball recoveries, duels won, and interceptions.

Losing him now leaves a sizeable gap in the heart of midfield, especially with Enzo Fernández still adjusting to a deeper role and Romeo Lavia not fully fit.

Santos ‘Ready’ to Step Up

But Maresca remains confident that 21-year-old Andrey Santos can take charge.

“Andrey is ready. His position is playing as a No.6, like Moi, but he is ready,” Maresca insisted.

Santos showed glimpses of his talent during an impressive loan spell at Strasbourg last season. His sharp tackling, quick passing, and courage under pressure make him a natural replacement for Caicedo.

This season, however, he has had limited opportunities—only three starts across all competitions. The Leeds clash may now become his biggest chance yet to cement his place in Chelsea’s rotation.

Shock Midfield Solution: Josh Acheampong

In a surprising twist, Maresca also mentioned academy defender Josh Acheampong as another potential midfield option.

Acheampong, only 18, is a centre-back by trade but has trained in various roles under Maresca, including defensive midfield.

“One that can play in that position is Josh [Acheampong], but we will see,” Maresca said.

The youngster impressed during pre-season with his strength, composure, and maturity. While it would be a bold move to use him at Elland Road, Maresca’s willingness to consider him shows the growing trust in Chelsea’s academy pipeline.

Balancing Caution and Competition

Chelsea fans may be eager to see James take control in midfield again, but Maresca’s firm stance suggests the captain may be rotated—or even rested—against Leeds.

The manager stressed that the club cannot rely on “miracle minutes” from players returning from injury. With Levi Colwill out long-term and Lavia still working toward full fitness, Chelsea are already thin in key areas.

“We are a better team with Cole, with Moi, with Levi,” Maresca admitted. “But when these players are not available, we must find solutions. Now we need to do something different.”

A Crucial Test for Chelsea’s Depth

The trip to Elland Road will test Chelsea’s depth, resilience, and tactical adaptability. Leeds are physical, intense, and dangerous at home. Maresca will need a disciplined midfield, controlled possession, and smart rotations to avoid being overwhelmed.

Whether Santos starts, James returns to midfield, or Acheampong receives a shock nod, Chelsea must find the right balance to navigate the next three matches.

What happens during Caicedo’s suspension could shape Chelsea’s December—and determine how strong they finish the year.
