Former Leeds United striker Jermaine Beckford has heavily criticized Dominic Calvert-Lewin following the clubโs dismal goalless draw against bottom-of-the-table Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. In a match heavily disrupted by the brutal conditions of Storm Boelo, Daniel Farkeโs side failed to generate any real quality in the final third, leaving fans and pundits deeply frustrated.
Calvert-Lewin, who shook off a late foot injury to lead the line as Leedsโ number nine, endured a thoroughly anonymous evening on Wearside
. The England forward looked a shadow of the player who scored a crucial equalizer against Manchester United just a week prior. Isolated and sluggish, he failed to record a single shot, won very few of his duels, and was lucky to remain on the pitch for 85 minutes before finally being substituted.
Speaking on the post-match breakdown, Beckford did not pull any punches regarding the star striker’s lack of impact.
“As a Leeds number nine, you have to occupy the center-backs and drag your team up the pitch. Dominic had absolutely no presence out there today,” Beckford stated bluntly. “I know the weather was shocking, but you cannot have your marquee frontman completely floating through games without making the keeper work. It was wasteful, it was quiet, and frankly, it can’t keep happening if Leeds want to achieve anything serious this season.”
With back-up forward Lukas Nmecha reportedly growing frustrated with his lack of minutes on the bench, pressure is mounting on Farke to make a change. If Calvert-Lewin cannot consistently impose his physicality on opposing defenses, he may soon find himself fighting to keep his spot in the starting eleven.
