Gary Neville has criticised Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu after his role in Everton’s dramatic 2-2 draw, calling his decision in the build-up to Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ stoppage-time equaliser “stupid.”

United appeared to have secured all three points at Hill Dickinson Stadium after Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring early in the second half and Benjamin Sesko restored United’s lead with an 88th-minute header. Everton had earlier levelled through Tyrique George, setting up a frantic finish.

Maitland-Niles then produced the decisive moment in the sixth minute of added time. The Everton debutant, who had joined from Lyon for around £4.3 million, unleashed a spectacular long-range strike to rescue a point for David Moyes’ side. Neville, though, focused on what happened before the shot.

He argued Dorgu abandoned his defensive position to press an Everton player in isolation. According to Neville, Andrey Santos failed to cover the space behind him, allowing Everton to progress down United’s left.The former United captain also questioned Michael Carrick’s defensive changes, particularly the reshuffling of the back four late in the match.

He argued United should have remained organised rather than allowing players to leave their positions with Everton throwing numbers forward.The draw leaves United with four points from three Premier League matches, while Everton remain unbeaten with five points. For Neville, Maitland-Niles’ spectacular finish was only the final part of a defensive sequence United should have stopped much earlier.
