Jacob Ramsey’s late strike salvaged a point, but Shearer was far from impressed with the overall display.
Speaking after the match, Shearer singled out the £100,000-a-week midfielder for particular criticism. “He looks like a player who’s lost all belief in himself,” the former Toon striker said. “When you’re earning that kind of money you have to demand the ball, dictate the tempo and drive the team forward. Instead he was anonymous for long spells. The body language was poor, the decision-making was hesitant and there was no urgency.”
Shearer went further, questioning whether the player still has the confidence required at this level. “You can see it in his movement. He’s second-guessing himself. At this club, under this ownership, with the expectations that come with it, that simply isn’t good enough. If he can’t rediscover the player we signed, then the club has to look at options. Newcastle want to compete this season. Sitting on high wages and contributing so little won’t help them do that.”
The former England captain made it clear he believes reinforcements or a change in personnel may be necessary. “If they are serious about finishing higher up the table and challenging on multiple fronts, they cannot carry passengers. The standards have to be higher. Sometimes the best thing for everyone is a clean break so the team can move forward.”
The comments will put further pressure on the player and new head coach Matthias Jaissle as Newcastle look to build on an unbeaten start. While a point against a dangerous Bournemouth side is not a disaster, Shearer’s blunt assessment has left little room for ambiguity about where he feels improvement is urgently required.
