Former Sunderland manager and notoriously hard-to-please pundit Roy Keane has never been one to hand out compliments lightly. Known for his brutally honest critiques and sky-high standards, the Manchester United legend usually leaves players trembling rather than smiling. Yet, amidst Sunderland’s mixed start to the domestic campaign, Keane has completely caught the footballing world off guard by singling out one player who has utterly won his heart.
That man is French international defender Nordi Mukiele.
When Sunderland secured Mukiele’s signature from Paris Saint-Germain for a £9.5 million fee following their promotion, many viewed it as a high-profile gamble. He was a player of undeniable pedigree—having played for RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen—but the question remained whether a Champions League regular could stomach the gritty, relentless nature of a Premier League relegation fight or top-flight survival mission.
According to Keane, Mukiele has not only answered those doubts, but he has also set the standard for the entire squad.
“An Incredible Mentality”
Speaking after Sunderland’s recent setbacks, including a tough 2-0 defeat against Brighton, Keane refused to bash the Black Cats. Instead, he directed his focus toward the 28-year-old right-back’s elite character.
“You look at teams when they lose, and you see who shrinks and who stands up,” Keane remarked in his trademark candid style. “Most players hide when things go south. But this lad, Mukiele? He always steps up for Sunderland, even in defeat! Nobody expected a lad coming from PSG to have that kind of dirt under his fingernails. He has won my heart because of his incredible mentality. He fights until the 95th minute, no matter the scoreline.”
