The controversy surrounding Leeds United’s disallowed goal against Bournemouth has attracted significant attention following an official explanation from the Premier League Match Centre.
The statement clarified why Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s early effort was overturned after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review during Saturday’s Premier League encounter at the Vitality Stadium.

Although Leeds United supporters believed their team had taken an early lead, the celebrations were short-lived after the referee was advised to review the incident. The decision eventually went against Daniel Farke’s side, with Calvert-Lewin penalised for handball in the build-up to the goal.
It is worth clarifying that the official explanation came from the Premier League Match Centre, rather than the Football Association (FA).
Leeds United started the encounter brightly, showing attacking intent and putting Bournemouth under pressure during the opening stages.
Their positive start appeared to produce the perfect reward when Dominic Calvert-Lewin found the back of the net following an impressive attacking move involving Harry Wilson and Jayden Bogle.
The striker initially celebrated what looked like an important opening goal for the visitors. However, the celebrations were interrupted when VAR intervened to investigate a possible handball.
After reviewing the incident, the officials determined that the ball had made contact with Calvert-Lewin’s left arm immediately before entering the net.

Referee Michael Salisbury subsequently overturned the original decision, awarding Bournemouth a free-kick instead of allowing the goal to stand.
The decision left Leeds players and supporters disappointed, particularly because their team had looked dangerous and appeared capable of taking control of the match.
Premier League Releases Official Explanation
Following the incident, the Premier League Match Centre published an explanation outlining the reason behind the VAR intervention.
The referee’s final announcement was also made clear:
“After review, the ball strikes the arm of Leeds No.9 – the final decision is free-kick.”
The explanation confirmed that the officials considered the handball offence sufficient to disallow the goal, even though the contact was accidental.
Under the handball rules, a goal cannot stand when a player accidentally handles the ball immediately before scoring themselves. This explains why the referee’s decision was upheld following the review.
The clarification has provided supporters with a better understanding of the incident, although opinions about the decision may continue to differ.

Dean suggested that the ball appeared to make contact with the inside of Calvert-Lewin’s bicep.
He explained that, from the angle behind the goal, the incident looked like a handball.
His assessment supported the decision to overturn the goal, although the incident remained a frustrating moment for Leeds supporters.
The situation also attracted attention because Calvert-Lewin was making his 50th appearance for Leeds United. Scoring on such an occasion would have been a memorable achievement for the striker.
Instead, his effort became one of the major talking points of the match.
